Mark Luger, Instructor:

Mark Luger's private music studio in Wayzata, MN.

I teach at Schmitt Music in Minnetonka on Sunday, Monday, and Thursday
and at my private studio (above) in Wayzata on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.

I have been teaching for over 20 years. I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in saxophone performance from St. John’s University in Collegeville. MN.  I also served as saxophone coach for the MMEA  All-State Concert Band.

I have evolved an extremely efficient system of learning that focuses on all the fundamentals ensuring a thorough grounding, that also covers the finer points of musicality, and enables a rapid progress of students to develop into mature-sounding musicians who give polished performances very early on.

I work with beginning grade school students, middle school, junior high, high school and college students.  I also teach adults.

I have been very successful in turning around students who have trouble keeping up with the rest of their band.  One example, of many, a few years back, a student who attended Buffalo Middle School, started taking saxophone lessons with me halfway through 5th grade because he was struggling in band.

The following fall in 6th grade he made First Chair (best saxophone in his band).  The next year in 7th grade, out of all the best alto saxophonists in school bands statewide who auditioned, he was one of only two alto saxophonists chosen (second best saxophone in Minnesota, in grades 6-8) to make the I.A.J.E. (International Association for Jazz Education) Mid Level Honor Jazz Band that played at the Hot Summer Jazz Festival on a stage in front of the Dakota Club in downtown Minneapolis that summer.  (He was a 7th grader among nearly all 8th graders.)

How do you choose the best teacher?  One extremely good way of measuring teachers’ effectiveness is to check the success of their studentsCheck out the many honors and awards my students have achieved. See  Student Achievements and Student News.
